The 2012 Calendar

I can't believe that it has been so long since I have posted anything. But that could be because there hasn't been much done lately. But I plan to have a productive year 2012.

I just finished this quilt that was started in 2011 and just recently quilted. I had never seen a Burgoyne Surrounded done scrappy before but I do like the look. Have you?

I have hopes of completing the tops of these quilts in 2012.

First I am about to start Lily Rosenberry by Sue Garman here are the fabrics I have chosen. The urn will be fussy cut with the print. Windows Live is giving me trouble but you can see the pattern here. http://www.quakertownquilts.com/patterns/sue-garman.html?p=3 I plan to make the four block version.

The background is a tone on tone from Windham Fabrics called Mary's Blenders.

Then I want to make this quilt that I have been collecting fabrics for. It is in the Quilts of Virginia book.

Then lastly by now least I want to make Ballaarat Beauties by Michelle Yeo. I have always wanted to do a Mariner's Compass quilt. Or I guess I could say that 2012 will be a year of circular blocks. Do you have plans for 2012 on your calendar? I know that this sounds very ambitious for one year, but I am going to try really hard to accomplish these plans.

Getting on the Band Wagon or Not

The quilting blogs and Yahoo Groups are all abuzz over hexagons. If I may regress - One time I was told that I was going to be a grandmother of a little girl and I immediately started a baby quilt, but then I was told sorry you are going to be a grandmother of a little boy. That little boy is now turning 10 and I did eventually get that grand-daughter. This is a photo of the hexagons I have which will become a doll blanket for that grand-daughter.

I guess I better finish it up so she will have it when Santa brings her a new baby doll.

As I said, everyone is doing hexagons, but I think I will do Pies and Tarts. I purchased this cute little package a while back and here it sits. I am a real push over for something that is packaged so cute. I will use my favorite 19th century reproduction fabrics.

Right now I plan to only do a small quilt, but who knows I might have so much fun making these that I will want a large quilt!

On to another subject - finally the Texas heat has cooled down a little and it seems like fall. Fall and Spring are my favorite seasons. I recently stitched this reproduction sampler and it has a real fall look to it. The sampler is from the collection of the Chester County Historical Society in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

I have also been working on my Farmers Wife quilt and I am over half way. These are the latest blocks. So far with the exception of the sashing and setting blocks I have used my fabric collection. It has been fun looking through some of my much older fabrics.

STAGES

Sounds like a self-help book LOL - well I am in various stages. My Frost on the Ferns quilt is back from the long-arm quilter. I think she did a great job.

Today I picked up the Nebraska Waves quilt, but haven't even sewn the binding on or trimmed it. I think I will leave the hand sewing for a retreat I am going to in a couple of weeks. It is quilted in an all-over design here is a close-up.

I have also put the last cross stitch in the Mary Wigham sampler from the Ackworth School. I think this was one of the hardest samplers I have made. The counting was very hard. I should have basted a grid on it. However, it is a reproduction of what Mary did. I am blown away how these young girls executed these samplers. Mary was only 7 when she stitched hers. I still need to press this before I take it to the framer.

Today I finished my Burgoyne Surrounded top. This is not the best picture it is only bordered on the top and bottom. The pattern is from Kaye England based on an antique quilt she saw. I think it is unique since this quilt is usually done in as a two color quilt.

Settled Again

A week ago we had hardwood floors installed in the guest room and my sewing room. There was stuff strung all over the house. Like this

And the sewing room was emptied out and Mr. Quilts painted it too. Thank you dear!

So once again things are back in place. I am very pleased with it. It is nothing spectacular like some you see, but it is all mine.

I am very happy about my new design wall.

A place to sit and sew or look at a book and dream about the quilts I want to make. Behind the chair I will have a gallery of small quilts and samplers that I have stitched. I love the looks of the Cherry floors. They are so slick I could have a chair race on them. LOL

This is the cutting area and more storage.

I am still sorting through books and such that I want to recycle in some way.

And most of all I want to start to sew again. The little quilt on the design wall needs a correction and to be quilted along with several other small quilts that are patiently waiting their turn to be quilted. I guess I better get to work.

Something Old Something New

I will start with the Something New. I made this little log cabin quilt for my sister. I think it turned out real cute it is from the book "Twenty Little Log Cabins" by Gwen Marston. If you like small quilts like I do it is a good book to have in your collection. Amazon has copies for sale.

Since it is so beastly hot here in Texas I have spent a lot of time in the house. I finished up one quilt top and have it ready to go to the longarm quilter. I also made this small quilt - it is machine pieced and machine quilted. It was fun to make. I think it will look great this fall with a pitcher of fall leaves or flowers sitting on it. It was designed by Jo Morton.

Now for the Something Old. Dawn always shares her wonderful collections of old sewing items. So today I thought I would also show you some of the things that my deal friend Janet (no blog) gave to me.

First are a couple of looms for weaving - do any of you remember have anything like this when you were small? Perhaps you wove a blanket for your doll.

The price for the littlest loom when it was new was .50 cents.

Here is an assortment of items. I am not sure how the bone needles were used - I am thinking perhaps for weaving, maybe even darning. Do any of you know. Also the needles in the lower right corner look more like stakes LOL they have a flat very sharp point on them. One has a small knob on the end and I am thinking it is a tapestry needle which have blunt ends on them. The blue glass darning egg is one I favor. The little shoe hook is about 2 inches long so I am thinking it might have been used for a childs shoe.

I also have this collection of mother of pearl belt buckles and buttons which I would like to display some way . The emery stawberries are silk and well worn. The item below the emery is a ivory book mark. And below the bookmark is a little Brown Jug - anyone remember hearing that song? Sorry it tipped over. In the center is a little silk purse the size of a quarter. I have to wonder what was carried in it. Maybe a sixpence for good luck on someone's wedding day?? The small bar of Ivory Soap at one time had a eyelet on the top and was used as a shoe fob. It was a giveaway from Proctor and Gamble with so many Ivory Soap Wrappers sometime in the late 1800's.

Weekend

Hi everyone, this weekend I participated in a Virtual Retreat on one of the Yahoo Groups that I am on. I worked on a top that has been sitting around for way too long. It is Nebraska Waves by Jo Morton. I have reduced the size by one row. I will use a black fabric for the setting blocks and border.

I am going to leave that on the design wall for a couple of days in case I want to tweak the placement of the blocks. So in the meantime I am working on this hand piecing project.

I ordinarily machine piece but chose not to for this project with the small pieces. it will be 30 x 30 when it is complete.

I saw this on Ann Hermes' blog and just had to copy the idea. Thanks Ann!

The yardstick is an antique - I have no idea where it come from. Most like from my Dad's business when Mr. Quilts closed it up after his passing. But I found another one at Home Depot in the paint department. It is very sturdy and after it was stained and waxed it looks old.

It is just another way I can display my quilts in my home.

This Week

As you may have guessed by now I like making doll size quilts designed by Jo Morton, Kathleen Tracy, and Pam Buda. So I decided that a needed a doll bed to display them on. I have been after my husband for quiet some time to make me one. He has come through for me once again. The quilt is designed by Kathleen Tracy and I think it looks great on the bed.

I have also been working on my Mary Wigham Sampler and I do not have too much more to completion. Mary was seven years old when she stitched it and the reproduction has Mary's mistakes included. This is the second spot sampler I have stitched and I think I have added a few mistakes of my own. I think I will go back to band samplers as they are easier to count.

I have also pulled this piece out to work on. It is a needlepoint sampler that I started way back in the early to mid eighties. It was designed by Chottie Alderson, who has since passed away. She had access to the workrooms of the Victorian and Albert Museum in London and studied the needlework. The different motif's represent different styles of stitching. She also includes in her class the history of each style. The one I like best is the Louis XIII (1601-1643), son and heir of Henry IV and Marie de Medici. It is the one I am working on and if you look closely you can see the oak leaves. In 1631 Louis built a hunting retreat and the gardens were designed to look like the beautiful embroideries of the period.

Too many WIP's

I have too many works in progress and I have been trying to narrow the collection down.

I have this block of the month going on. I have one more block to finish so I will be up to date.

If you are wondering about the blank spot - I messed up when cutting. So if I can't find a fat quarter I will have a "make-do" sashing for that block. The blocks are not in any particular order.

Then I am part of a block swap. These are the blocks that I received the first month. Aren't they great? I am trying to decide how I want to set them. I love blue and white quilts.

I am also working on these blocks. My friend Sarah created the pattern with permission. The original quilt circa 1850-1875 is in the personal collection of Brenda Papadakis author of Dear Jane® These unique blocks are set in the quilt in a very unusual setting.

I also have a quilt in the works that I will show in a future post. Along with a cross stitched sampler.

Do you have too many works in progress? I think that having more than one project going at a time keeps things from getting boring - especially when it is the same block throughout a quilt.

Just 15 Minutes a Day

A very nice lady, on one of the yahoo groups that I subscribe too, challenged us to sew 15 minutes a day. For me this was a no brainer since I sew every day with a rare exception. So I decided that I would do a 15 minute a day project. I have this quilt that I wanted to hand quilt so I thought what a great opportunity.

I had already started, but it was put aside for another project. So this way I will have it done in time for fall decorating. Why don’t you challenge yourself to 15 minutes a day on a project. And be sure that you let me know of your progress.

As you know from my last post I also enjoy stitchery so I wanted to show you a new project that I received in the mail a few days ago.

This is a Shepherds Bush Design and I ordered it directly from them. The box is sold separately. The box is hinged and lined. I thought it would make a great gift - maybe for some lucky Mother on her special day, or to keep for yourself.

Mr. Quilts just stuck his head in the door and said “mail’s here – nothing much except a Primitive magazine” little does he know I have been watching the mail every day for this. LOL

I don’t know about you but I am so bored with the quilting magazines on the newsstands today. With the exception of Quiltmania. But I think I am going to really enjoy this one. There is very little advertising and the projects look to be very nice. So if you like the looks of primitive quilts and darker fabrics you might want to check it out. I subscribed here.

I almost forgot to show you my newest finish. It is called Baby Rose and was a project from Jo Morton’s Little Women Club. I am pleased with the way it turned out and am anxious to display it.

Handwork

As some of you know, in addition to quilting I love handwork, and lately I have been doing more than usual.

I just finished this sampler and picked it up from the framer. I am very pleased with the end result. Originally I was going to give this to my granddaughter, but decided to enjoy it myself for awhile.

Now that is done I have picked up my Mary Wigham Sampler. Mary was a student at the Ackworth School when she stitched her sampler in 1790. As you can see I have a long ways to go to completion. I am using 32 count linen over 2 threads. Sorry it appears messy, but linen wrinkles and it is too large for a scroll frame.

You can see a similar Quaker spot sampler that I stitched here.

Dawn a fellow blogger asked that I show some of my Needle Rolls that I have stitched. These were designed by Shepherds Bush I have several more to stitch in my collection of needlework to be done. I don’t know exactly how far back Needle Rolls go, but I use mine as a decorative item rather than the original intent. Be sure you stop by Dawn’s blog and see her beautiful Hexy Stars Quilt.

I haven’t completely given up my quilting. LOL I have been hand piecing this little table topper. It has been fun for a change. I used some of Cindy Blackbergs stamps. This is called Honeycomb Stars and was designed by Cindy and featured in American Patchwork and Quilting in June 2010.

This project is a good one to take along to sew on when I have a few minutes.

There has been a lot going on in the sewing room over the last few weeks. I am over half way done with my Farmers Wife Quilt. I have started to assemble the rows as you can see here. I have two more rows ready to add, but have run out of design wall space (big sigh here).This has been a fun project to work on. The blocks have gone together nicely. I plan to use this quilt on my bed and intended to just have it quilted in an all over design, but when I see the setting triangles it makes me want to have it custom quilted – wouldn’t half feather wreaths look great there and have the sashing quilted down the middle?

I finally finished up my cross stitch project Enchanted Alphabet. Here are a couple of quick picture that I snapped as I was rushing off to the framers.

Yesterday I picked this quilt up from the longarm quilter, I thinks she did a great job. Love those feathers in the sashings. I think I am going to bind it in red to pick up the colors in the border. The picture looks a little faded, the greens are more olive tone than they appear. This was a block of the month designed by my friends Betsy Chutchian and Betty Edgell. I have had it done for well over a year, but it hung in the closet waiting to be quilted.

I started my spring house cleaning and decorating this week. I hope to finish up tomorrow and have the weekend free to sew.

Sewing, Sewing, and more Sewing

I have been really busy at the sewing machine working on the Farmers Wife Quilt. These blocks finish to 6 inches and they are addictive – I can’t stop making them. I need 128 of them and I have almost 50 done.

I also have these three Civil War Blocks on my design wall the bottom one is a mistake that turned into a great substitute.

I have been on a book buying spree. Sometimes I just can’t resist and these are all great books with a lot of great projects.

I am a person that can’t stand it if I don’t have something to do with my hands. So when I am not sewing I do cross stitch. The little girl in the sampler that I showed you in my January 9 post now has a head. I hope to get it completed real soon.

It’s a Jammie Day here in Texas

Last night we had rain, sleet, snow and ice. So today the town in almost shut down. Terrible roadways and stranded motorists. I feel so grateful that I no longer have to get out in it or make a decision about what to do. So I stayed in my jammies all day and sewed.

About 10 days ago I went to a quilting retreat so I thought I would show you some of the little projects that I worked on.

This was a fabric challenge quilt and we had to focus on the acorns hence, the oak leaves. The applique is a freebie from Sentimental Stitches. It is from an antique quilt called Beyond the Cherry Tree. I was pleased with the end result.

I also completed these tops. I ran out of red fabric for the border on one, so I will just bind it in blue. I think that the little one is so cute. I want Mr. Quilts to make me a doll bed so I can use these little cuties.

I also worked on this wall hanging called House on the Square by Jacqueline Paton. I have since placed all of the red wool chimneys on the top. Maybe I will sew them down tomorrow because it looks like it will be a repeat of today. This was a fun quilt to make.

It is Snowing in Texas

Today we are getting our first, and probably our last, snow of the year. Here in North Central Texas snow is rare. I don’t think this one will be a big one like last year when we got 12 inches.

Here in Texas we plant Pansies for winter color!

The temperatures are falling so it could get slippery later in the day. I am sure my grandchildren are hoping for a snow day tomorrow!

This will be a good day to stay in and sew or stitch. I am working on this project

It is “Enchanted Alphabet” by Lavender and Lace. I am using 32 count Linen. I find myself humming the childhood alphabet song while I am stitching.

I just looked out the window and since I took the pictures it is definitely starting to stick on the roofs and grass.

1st Design Wall of the Year

Where did 2010 go? My year is starting off with some ripping. See the block on the right some of the pieces are not where they should be.

The block on the far left is from Barbara Brackman’s new blog – see previous post for information.

Then over the weekend I made this handy little bag. It is just right for carrying thread, scissors etc. and an applique block. The pattern is from This and That. It makes up quickly you can use a charm pack or cut your own 5” squares.<>I found these fabrics in my stash, which is so unlike me as I am a reproduction fabric person, so I think I will make some more for gifts.<>

Ever since I started my Dear Jane journey I have been interested in the civil war.

This year is the 150 Anniversary and Barbara Brackman has started a new blog. She is starting a new quilt commemorating this anniversary. There will be a pattern for an eight inch block every week. Something Different

Today I am going to show you how Mr. Q&H keeps busy. Along with becoming a Master Composter and volunteering for various gardening projects that Fort Worth sponsors he is a wood turner. He is a member of the North Texas Woodturners Association. I love the beauty of the wood that comes through.

Here are some photos of some of the pieces he has turned. I love the next piece you can see where the worms ate away at the tree.

The grain on the next pieces is beautiful. He also achieves a very smooth finish.

The unique shape of the next pieces comes from the fact that they are from the crotch of the tree and you can see some of the bark that is left on. The one with the dark spot running down the center comes from a tree that had a crack.

The following is a bowl that is in the works. It is very fragile and you can see all of the worm holes. It is going to be a beauty when it is complete.

Design Wall Monday - Another Finish

Since last Monday I have finished the Philadelphia Pavement top, all two thousand four hundred and one 2” pieces plus borders. I am very pleased with the results and love the graphic nature of this quilt. I first saw this in Vintage Quilts way back in 2007 and I knew that I just had to make it. I wish I had a better picture of the entire top, but I do not have a place to lay it out flat or, two tall people to hold it! LOL

I am not sure what I will pull out the UFO stack to work on next, but I am glad that I now have one less.

Today I am starting on the next project on my Power of 10 list. It is Philadelphia Pavement pattern that dates back to 1895. I have three quadrants sewn so I will be working on the final one. This is what one quadrant looks like.

One Down and Several to go

It felt so good to remove it from the list. Now to decide what project to do next. Let’s see…maybe Philadelphia Pavement or ????

UFO’s

I have several projects that are near completion. So I decided to put the “Power of Ten” to work for me. What is the “Power of Ten” you ask?

The "Power of 10" in quilting is not some higher mathematical formula that quilters all need to learn to make a quilt. It is a simple way to complete those projects we want to finish before we buy anymore fabric.

First, simply find the projects that you are no longer interested in completing and pass them on to someone who would love it as much as you once did.

Second, list "10" projects that you would like to complete. Now remember "Only 10" projects are to be on the list.

Third, begin working on the projects on the list and spend three hours toward completing it.

Fourth, keep a list of projects and the hours worked.

Fifth, once three hours are spent on a project move to the next. A quilter's interest wanes and is usually spent after three hours.  Now if a project requires two to four hours it doesn't matter. Simply finish the project. Feel good about finishing it.

Sixth, find another project and add it to the list. Remember, only Ten Projects are your focus.

Seventh, continue to rotate the projects you are working on.

Eighth step is to list the supplies needed to finish your projects.

Ninth would be to shop at (substitute your favorite quilt shop)for items to finish your projects.

…and Tenth, the `Power of Ten` becomes reality when you are able to share your project.

Note: I need to give credit to Texas Quiltworks for this sage advice.

So today I pulled up the list on my computer and chose this project to work on.

So tonight I will prepare the elements for the bottom border while I watch some TV and soon this will be done.

I am taking a part in Design Wall Monday. I have been working on my “Nearly Insane” blocks and also started a new project “Farmers Wife Quilt”
This is a change of pace for me and has been fun. What is on your design wall?
We had quiet a few Trick or Treaters tonight, but most of the smaller children go to one of the area churches that feature Trunk or Treat, which makes it nice for the little ones and safer too. These two stopped by my house tonight from a land far far away!

They were so cute and their Mother, my DIL, always does a great job on their costumes.

Another Finish

Today I finished up another quilt. This one was designed by Kathleen Tracy from the book “Remembering Adelia”. When I took the picture I did not know that Mr. Quilts fingers were in the way. :(

I have also been spending a lot of time doing some needlepoint. This nativity set will be a gift for my Granddaughter. They will be free standing. I need to get busy and do the finishing. Christmas will be here before we know it. Yikes They have been a lot of fun to stitch. I still have to finish the background stitching on a camel. Maybe tomorrow when I attend my stitching group.

I also need to get back to the quilting as I have two challenges to finish and I am in the process of hand quilting my basket quilt.

I AM NOT PERFECT

I have joined the I am not perfect protest. Because I am not perfect! I enjoy life, I am not a fashionista, the points on my quilt blocks are not always perfect, but I enjoy the process. If I have a dust bunnie on my floor it will get swept up another day if I choose to wait. And I could go on and on.

Now, since I have admitted it I will show you what I have been up to the last few days. I have been trying my hand at various applique methods, but I think I will go back to my tried and trusted method. Here are three not so perfect examples but I will probably go ahead and use them in my quilt.

What I Have Been Up To …..

It has been a long time since I have posted anything. Since last time I attended a retreat with the 19th Century Patchwork Divas. I count myself lucky to have been able to be with these women and their extraordinary quilts. Sorry I can’t show pictures of their quilts and some of them will be in their book that will be coming out.

I worked on several projects while attending the retreat. This being one of them. It is now ready to be sent off to the long arm quilter. It is called Star Peony by Kathleen Tracy.

Yesterday I picked this quilt up from the quilter and sewed the binding on last night. It is called Pieceful Nights by Lori Smith. Sorry the picture is so dark.

Now I am working on this quilt. It is from the book “When the Cold Winds Blow by Blackbird Designs, and is called Frost on the Ferns.

I need to finish up the bottom border and dye some ric-rack that goes around the center.

I am also getting ready to attend another retreat in a couple of weeks. I am not sure what I will work on. I have another quilt in progress and I am getting itchy to start a new project.

School started in August here Texas and my Granddaughter started Kindergarten and her big brother started third grade. They are growing up so fast!

The Fed Ex Man stopped at my house today

I am forever whining that I just do not have enough space for my quilting. And, since I have filled every closet in the house with my “stuff”, with the exception of Mr. Quilts and my clothing closets, I ordered a new table for the computer area in my sewing room. It arrived today and I hurriedly unboxed it and proceeded to tear my room apart. It still is not big enough but I do have more space.

These drawers are filled with kits and in the smaller one are fabrics that I have pulled for the Nearly Insane quilt (see July 31, 2009 post) and below is my design wall with projects that I am working on.

Here is my computer area and the drawers to the left of the computer are filled with just one of my favorite designers fabric.

Below is more fabric storage and the ironing and cutting area. I also have the closet also filled with fabric.

As you can see I have used every inch. It might not be beautiful but it is my little space.

Yesterday my five year old granddaughter spent time with me. She said that she likes my sewing room and also that she likes to be alone with me, Nana, “as sometimes her brother is annoying.” LOL I love to have her spend time with me and can’t wait until she can sew with me. I tried cross stitch yesterday and she said “I don’t think I am ready yet!”

Getting Back on Track

I think I have mentioned it before, but I have been having trouble getting back into things for a couple of months. Finally, I am getting there.

This is a quilt that was part of a workshop when Jo Morton first visited Texas way back in 2007. It was put on the back burner for awhile and then hung in the closet waiting to be quilted. I took it to my long arm quilter and as always Sheri did a great job. My friend Sarah helped me find just the right binding. Thanks Jo for designing it and Sarah for having a great eye .I was out of town for a few days attending a wedding and catching up with family. When I arrived back home this was waiting for me. It is a needlepoint tree ornament that I had finished and had sent off to the finisher. I think they did a great job – especially since it is an odd shape. Sorry the photo isn’t better. Maybe I should hit Santa up for a new camera!

Today I am hand quilting a small Irish Chain quilt and I just put a pot of Anasazi Beans on to cook. I used this recipe except since I did not have any Jalapeno bacon I used black peppered bacon and two minced Jalapenos, with seeds removed. I will mix up some cornbread and pop it into the oven to bake and dinner will be ready. I like it when I can just put my dinner on to cook and forget it don’t you?

Later today, when it cools a little, I need to run out and buy some Mylar and get a challenge quilt started.

Productive Day

Today started out to be a gloomy one and we got some much needed rain. And, the temporary cool spell was very welcomed. So I decided it was a good day to stay home and do some laundry. I also organized my digital scrapbooking file on the computer. Do your files ever get really messy and out of order? I also straightened my sewing room. So with that all done I feel free to do some things that I love - “Quilting”

I have become a stamping fool! What is a stamping fool you ask? I ordered these neat rubber stamps from Cindy Blackberg in Tennessee. So I have been hand piecing a wonderful table topper that she designed for American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine. Each of these little stars measure 3-1/2 inches across

As you can see from this back view the lines are easy to read, much quicker than pencils and templates, and you do not stretch your fabric like you can do using templates. Being they are hand pieced you can manipulate the seams like you want to for easier pressing. Needless to say, I am really sold on these stamps and plan to buy some more.

I find the hand piecing very relaxing to do and I can complete the little stars very quickly while watching the news.

I couldn’t wait to see how they were all going to look when they were put together. So here is a sample

By the looks of some of these pictures I better practice my photo editing skills. But I think you can get the picture. This makes a good take-a-long project for when I am waiting for appointments or for get togethers with my sewing group.

Some Finished Items

I feel like I have been spinning my wheels for over a month. Just can’t settle down to do any one thing. Maybe it is the heat! LOL Seriously it has been blistering hot here in Texas and I think we are in for a very long HOT summer. OK I will stop complaining and show you what I have been doing.

I finished up a project that I have worked on for the past year. It is the Beatrix Potter Sampler, which is a reproduction from the Ackworth School in the United Kingdom. Being a reproduction you will see what you might believe to be errors, but it was charted from the original. You can find out more about Ackworth School Samplers at http://needleprint.blogspot.com/

This was stitched on 36 count linen over two threads with DMC floss.

I wish I knew more about the history of this particular sampler. I also have started the Mary Wigham Sampler

I have doing some needlepoint as well I have stitched this Nativity backdrop for my Granddaughter. I have all of the little people and animals to go along with this. I will get started on them as soon as I can purchase the stretcher bars. This will be finished as a free standing piece.

So I haven’t been sitting idly just flitting from one project to another. I love doing handwork when I watch television – or should I say listen to television!

Now, I think, a quilt is calling my name.

Busy Week – Proud Nana

This has been a busy week, but oh so fun! I started the week with the usual household chores, but then Tuesday arrived.

I was invited to have tea with my 5 year old Granddaughter Gracey. The tea was to celebrate her last week home with her Mother before she started Kindergarten in the fall. As you can see she was a very busy girl getting ready.

Here she is busy making fruit kabobs. She already made the cookies. Her recipes were from her My First Cookbook by Paula Deen.

Then she had to put the sugar, her favorite, in the sugar bowl and get those napkins in the rings>

Now off to get ready before her company arrives.

Ta-Da – you know a lady must have her gloves on.

She was a very elegant hostess. After the party she had to get into some more comfortable clothes – you know how it is ladies!

She is showing off the rosebud Nana brought her.

Then on Wednesday it was Grandson John’s, age seven, to shine. It was award day at school.

John is in the second grade and the whole family is very proud of him. He was awarded with 4 reading awards (including a gold medal)(3rd year in a row), he got Outstanding PE award, he got the Citizenship award for his class (3rd year in a row), Straight A's award (3rd year in a row) and voted "Most likely to become a scientist" award (voted by his classmates)!

Today was a little slower. I attended my Jo’s Little Women Club at the local quilt shop. Betsy author of "Gone to Texas" is the leader and does a great job. Tomorrow looks like it will slow down a little.

Catching Up

It has been awhile since I have written anything here so I thought I should get with it.

This week I attended a retreat/workshop with Jo Morton at Our House in Milford, Texas. This was not a project oriented retreat, but rather a study of Half Square Triangles. Jo showed pictures of antique quilts for inspiration along with some of her very cute small quilts, and we created our own projects. It was very interesting to see what each lady came up with. The projects were all very pretty. I will show a few of the works in progress. I did not get to take pictures of all of them and my pictures are not very good. But I did get permission from the owners of these projects to show them.

To start this is my project. It measures about 19 x 26 inches and I will add a top and bottom border, when my fabric order arrives. This quilt was inspired by the book “Piecing the Past” by Lynne Hagmeier.

The retreat was very relaxing and a lot of fun. The people at Our House really go the extra mile to make you feel at home.

In 10 days I will attend another retreat and will work on my Philadelphia Pavement quilt. Life is good.

Along with Spring Comes……..

Spring has arrived along with the yucky yellow pollen and strings from the trees that has everyone complaining. Also the damp weather makes for a visit from arthritis. But all in all it is a beautiful time of the year. On to more pleasant things.

Recently I have finished up a project that has been hanging around for a long time. It is a small Courthouse Steps. I think I will hand quilt this one.

I have also finished this quilt top. It was done as a “Mystery Quilt” at a local quilt shop. I have had the top done for quite awhile, but the borders created some problems for me. But now I can check it off the “works in progress” list. Yeah!

After finishing up those two I looked in my collection of projects to be started and decided that I would start working on this Philadelphia Pavement. The original quilt was made in 1895 by a Mother for her daughter in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. When finished it will have 2401 1-1/5 inch squares. This picture represents half of a quarter. Assembly is like putting a puzzle together, but it has been fun to see it all unfold!

Mr. Quilt and I planned a get-a-way to Fayetteville, Arkansas, but the weather forecast was not promising so it has been put off until May. I have two quilting retreats coming up, later this month and early next month, which I am looking forward to.

While working on projects I listen to audio books and right now I am listening to “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett. It is a very good and thought provoking. I would highly recommend it.

Guess that is about all that is new here in Texas.

Loose Ends

I finished this quilt top the other day

and then I was at loose ends as to what to start working on next. So I dug this out of my projects to finish

but decided that I did not want to work on it until fall. Then I pulled this out

and decided that it look bright and cherry and more like Spring. So I have been working on it along with this

which I have been stitching on for my grand daughter. It has been a nice change of pace.

I attended the Dallas Quilt show last week but was not too inspired, of course, that was probably a good thing, considering all of the projects I already have. I did purchase this book

which will be interesting to read and the quilt is very appealing for those of us that like mid 19th century quilts.

I guess that is it ……

Just Returned

It has been a long time since I have posted. I just returned from East Texas where I attended my first quilting retreat of 2010. It was snowy but we had a great time sewing.

Just outside the retreat center there is a magnificent tree and it was picture perfect covered with snow.

While there I finally finished this quilt designed by Blackbird Designs.

At the bottom I will add the year or my initials. I am still debating – what do you think I should add?

Another highlight of the retreat was the reveal of our round robin quilts that we have been working on for two years. There were 6 of us doing these and we had not seen them since we passed our centers to the first person. This is my quilt

Today I sewed. I haven’t sat down at the machine since Thanksgiving. For me that is pure torture, as I am in the habit of sewing every day!

One of my goals for 2010 was to quilt some of the many quilt tops I have hanging in the closet. So today I dug this little quilt out and finished it up. It was so much fun. The 9 patch blocks measure 1-1/2 inches. I purposely used a different fabric for the binding as I wanted it to look like an antique where the quilt makers used up what they had on hand. I am very pleased with how it turned out.

Tonight the temperature is to drop way down and here in North Central Texas we are not used to these temperatures. They say it will feel like zero with the wind chill factor. It will be good weather to stay in and sew and have a cup of hot tea!

Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone had a great Christmas and I want to wish you all a Happy New Year.

With this new decade starting I have been looking to the past. It seems just like yesterday that we were frantically preparing for 2000.

Today while looking for something I ran across a box of “trinkets” that my Mother-in-Law left to me. In it were an assortment of old greeting cards. I thought it appropriate to share pictures of two New Years cards.

Next year I will need to display them on an easel during the holidays. They are backed with Christmas greetings.

I do not make resolutions as they always seem to get broken, but I do set goals. This year one of my goals is to quilt this top.

My Mother appliqued this in the early 1930’s while waiting for the arrival of her first child. If I am reading Barbara Brackman’s “Encylopedia of Applique” it was a pattern called Pride of the Garden and was published by a Needlecraft Service in the newpaper. I looks like the leaves were reversed from the original. My paternal Grandmother was to quilt it, but developed an illness and was bed ridden for the balance of her life. I would like to pass this along to my Granddaughter someday.

Another of my goals is to finish up some “works in progress.” I hate to have things “hanging over my head”

Today I made a batch of Pretzel Turtles. These are my Grandson’s favorite. I love the salty sweet taste.

As you can see these are very easy to make

Pretzel Turtles

1 pkg. small pretzels – I use the Snyder’s square ones

1 bag of Rolos Candy

Half Pecans

Line cookie sheet with aluminum foil and cover with pretzels.

Top each Pretzel with an unwrapped Rolo – flat side down

Bake at 250 degrees for 4 minutes. Candy will not melt.

Remove from oven and top each piece with a half pecan pushing down gently. Cool Slightly and then refrigerate for about 10 minutes or until set.

I also made Clove Cookies – they are not too sweet and a very good with a cup of hot tea. I got this recipe when I stayed at the Case Sedona Bed and Breakfast in Sedona, Arizona

Clove Cookies

1/2 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 egg

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon ground cloves

Melt butter in a small pan over medium heat. Remove from heat and stir in sugar until well combined; then stir in vanilla. Add egg and beat until mixture is smooth. In a small bowl, stir together flour and cloves; gradually add to butter mixture blending thoroughly.

Drop dough by level teaspoonfuls onto well-greased baking sheets, spacing cookies 2-1/2 to 3 inches apart. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until edge are golden brown and puffy tops start to crinkle and collapse. Immediately transfer cookies to racks and let cool. Store airtight.

Makes about 4 dozen.

Several years ago a friend gave me a recipe for microwave peanut brittle and it turned out perfect. Last year we installed a new mixcrowave that is a lot more powerful than the old one. So I did not make any peanut brittle. My youngest strongly protested! So this year I decided to give it a try. The first batch burnt. The second batch was more like a hard caramel – edible but slightly sticky. So the third time was a charm and I made two batches.

Tomorrow or later today I will make the Pecan Sandies, Santa’s Whiskers – Southern Living 1985 Annual Recipes Page 323, and Cranberry Nut Bread.

Almost There

I am almost ready for Christmas. The tree is up, the house is decorated, the shopping is done, the packages are wrapped and the cards are in the mail. Whew! I made myself tired just thinking about it. Over the next couple of days I will do some baking and candy making.

Snow in Texas and other musings

Tuesday morning they predicted snow for parts of North Texas. Now I don’t want you followers from Wisconsin, Minnosota and other northern parts of this country to fall off you seat laughing. But here is a picture of my Grandchildren heading off to school in the snow. Look hard you can see it!

And it is offical the Christmas season has arrived “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” is on TV.

This picture reminds me so much of when my sons were little. Getting them ready for bed early so they could watch the specials on TV.

Last night Mr. Q and I attended the final tour of “Riverdance”. We planned to make a nice evening out of it and start with a nice dinner. But even though we left early due to traffic problems we had a quick sandwich at the Barnes and Noble Cafe across from Bass Hall! But it still was a nice evening and the performance was great. A couple of years ago we attended “Lord of the Dance” and I think I preferred it the best of the two.

Catalogs! Do any of you get tired of receiving junk mail? I have requested to be taken off of mail lists, but I am still getting tons of catalogs. I guess it is a sign of the economic times. Most of them are from companies that I have never done business with. My desk is really getting me down. I clean it up and the next day it is stacked high again. So I sit day after day tearing labels and those darned embedded order forms, with my name and address on them, out to shred.

I guess I better quit running on and get something done. I have a round robin quilt to finish along with other projects.

What I Have Been Doing

Aside from staying out of trouble I have taken a short break from quilting and have been doing some needlework. Here are a few of my recent finishes.

These will be finished into a tree ornaments. I have a Mr. Santa to go along with Mrs. Santa.

This will be finished in either a pillow or a cube.

And lastly this will be a pillow. Can you guess what it is???

Recently we had one of our favorite fall dinners. Stuffed Spaghetti Squash. I am including the recipe. The recipe came from the Beef It’s What for Dinner people.

Sirloin Stuffed Spaghetti Squash

1 lb. Beef top sirloin steak. ½ to ¾ inch thick

4-5 lb. Spaghetti squash

1 small onion, chopped

1 medium green bell pepper, chopped

2 medium tomatoes, chopped

1 tsp. Oregano leaves

1 tsp. Thyme leaves

½ tsp. Crushed red pepper

½ tsp. Garlic powder

1 Tbsp. Olive oil

¼ cup fresh parmesan cheese, grated

Cut squash in half lengthwise, scoop out seeds and microwave cut side down in ½” water for 15 min. While the squash cooks, chop onion, green pepper and tomato. Combine seasonings. Press into both sides of streak. Cook steak in large skillet with oil over medium heat for 3-5 minutes. Turn steak, moving to one side; sauté vegetables during last 5 min. Cut steak into ½ inch cubes and mix with vegetables and pan juices. Pull a fork from edges through squash until it resembles spaghetti. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Top each squash half with part of the steak, vegetables and pan juices. Sprinkle with parmesan. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 8-10 minutes.

Note: Be sure you pick a squash that is bright lemon yellow.

I have a new finished a new quilt. Sorry the pictures aren’t better, but I just don’t have space to hang it or lay it out flat.

This quilt is based on the Harriet Tubman block by Kaye England. I attended a weekend Civil War Mystery Quilt retreat.

My friend Betsy Chutchian has a new book out from Kansas City Star. It is based on Betsy’s great great grandmother’s 1857 journals and it is a wonderful book. I have had a the privilege of seeing some on Betsy’s quilt in person and they are beautiful.

I have two new things in my sewing room – a new sewing chair that I love and a thread tray for my most used threads.

I arrived home from my quilting retreat. It was great fun, as usual, and I am already looking forward to the next one. I did accomplish quiet a bit, but not what I planned to get done. This post in long and filled with pictures so grab a cup of tea and enjoy.

Sarah is busy working on the last few blocks of her “Dear Jane” quilt, which she finished piecing at this retreat. Congratulations Sarah aka SIS!

Shirley finished the last of her beautiful hand pieced “ Seven Sisters” block. This block was inspired by an antique quilt Shirley saw and her husband drafted it out for her. The quilt will have four blocks and most likely an applique border.

We all got a good laugh over this it is oyster crackers from some snack mix that looked like a miniature Grandmothers Flower Garden.

Show and Tell

We did not have as much show and tell this time. Everyone was working on the own “Robin Border Quilts. I have to apologize for the photos we were crowded in a small area.

SIS is also a knitter here she is modeling her very cute shrug. It was knit in one piece. She is a very busy gal being a elementary teacher and still finding time for her hobbies.

ML has a beautiful appliqued quilt done in neutrals.

Gloria finished her block for the Baltimore style quilt we have all contributed blocks to. We have not decided yet exactly what will be done with the quilt when it is finished. Most likely we will donate it to a charity for fund raising. This is the first time Gloria used the back basting method of applique and did a beautiful job.

Now for the “Robin Border quilts”

Gloria’s challenge was curved or circles.

Shirley’s challenge was half square triangles.

Cherie also had curves or circles.

ML was another curves or circles.

Barbara was a late starter and this is her center.

Penny’s challenge was dimensional and she “wowed” us with her unique way of accomplishing it.

Ladies you all did great work on your challenge. I can’t wait to see what you do next.

The quilts looked like so much fun that I decided to join in. This is my center. My next two rounds will be, Circles or curves – pieced or appliqued, and squares or rectangles.

After all of the ooh’s and ahh’s we had to acknowledge our much loved leader. Sarah aka SIN is a Dear Jane Goddess and our mascot for the retreat group is the frog. Gloria found the perfect gift for SIN and we were all surprised. And as you can see SIN thought it was great too!

Debbie was unable to attend the retreat this time, but did stop by on Sunday. This is her “Robin Border”

It is hard to see all of the embroidery, but it is Dick and Jane and Debbie did a beautiful job and added a lot of detail to the blocks. Great job Debbie.

She also gifted all of us with these darling sewing kits that she designed.

She also gifted us with two darling frog keychain fobs that her husband made.

Now that reality has set in I need to get off this computer and do the laundry and grocery shop.

A Good Day

It has been awhile since I have posted. Now that I am ready for my retreat coming up next week I have been working on this quilt from the Blackbird Designs Book “When the Cold Wind Blows”

But another reason this is a good day, the mail brought me two new books to enhance my library. The first is the new re-release of Barbara Brackman’s “Encyclopedia of Applique” it has five new projects in it, which I think are wonderful. A great reference book. Then the other is “The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt” by Laurie Aaron Hird. It comes with a bonus CD. The finished set on point quilt is very pretty and block pictures with letters from farm wives are great. The block drawings are clear and easy to follow. You can tell I am excited about these books.

And to top the day off, we signed a contract to get new windows and storm doors. This is something I have wanted for a long time! What more can a girl ask for!

A Long Weekend

I have been bored this weekend for no particular reason. I guess I was so busy getting ready for my upcoming retreat that I didn’t know what to start next. Not that I don’t have several projects in the works.

Today I finally decided to join an online BOW and start the Calico Garden Quilt. I have had the pattern in my collection since 2002, and was fortunate enough to see the original a couple of years ago. The blocks measure 3 inches. They are soooo cute!

I have also been working on my Mary Wigham Sampler. I have almost finished two sides. I will post a picture later.

A SAD fact

It is a sad fact that as we age it is harder to loose weight. So today I rejoined this group. Aside from the age factor, my quilting and needlework might be good for the soul, but not the waistline. So I hope that some of you will join me on this journey.

Instant Gratification

I have been busy working on getting projects together for an upcoming quilting retreat. This is the center for one quilt that I am going to be working on.

I am in need of one particular fabric to finish up the borders. So this morning I got in my car and drove 62 miles round trip to try to locate it. Since it is an older Jo Morton fabric I could not find it. I started looking for it online and was able to get what I needed.

If I hadn’t wanted instant gratification I could have saved time and gas. Do you ever do dumb things like this?

I better get back to making berries, 52 more to go, for the borders.

Projects

I recently finished this backpack. It is not very deep but will be good to carry some small items.

I have also have been preparing these little baskets to take with me to the retreat. I am making a smaller version, about 96 blocks. They are rather addictive to make. I am a little over half way there.

My appointment with the long arm quilter is coming up soon, and I have to get the backing done. Making the back is my least favorite thing about quilting. How about you – what is your least favorite?

This is not a very good picture as I do not have room enough to lay it all out – but you can get the idea.

Borders

What is there about borders that can slow you down. I finished sewing this top together in September 2008, and in May 2009 , I finally sewed one border on. Here it is almost September 2009 and it is not done. So today I drug my project box out and prepared another border. I am taking it along to a retreat I am attending next month and finish it up!

The next few days I will prepare more applique to take with me.

A Question

When you purchase a pattern and start to make the project, do you check on the designers/publishers website to see if there corrections to the pattern? You guessed it I got stung twice on the same pattern after I purchased fabric and cut into it.

A Celebration

First I am celebrating that I have the Nine Patches all done with a month to spare! I just need to bag them up.

And most importantly my youngest son turns 35 this week. For his birthday we always celebrate with a Shrimp Boil. Nothing FANCY here just good eats. This is a popular thing along the Gulf coast and the Low Country along the southern Atlantic Coast. You just spread the table with newspaper or brown bags. I always use a plastic tablecloth and when we are done just wrap the whole thing and put in the trash.

Here is my recipe and the cocktail sauce is an old family favorite.

Pat’s Frogmore Stew

Serves 8-10 people

7 lbs. Medium Shrimp

2-1/2 lbs. Smoked Sausage cut into 2 inch lengths

6 ears of corn halved

Small Red Potatoes – quartered or halved depending on size

1 Pkg. Zataran’s Shrimp Boil

1 Tablespoon of Cayenne Pepper or more

Fill large stock pot half full of water add Shrimp Boil and Cayenne Pepper. I used one well rounded tablespoon. Bring to a boil, add potatoes and bring to a boil again cook for about 10 minutes, add corn and sausage bring to a boil and cook for about 10 minutes more or until potatoes are tender. Remove potatoes, corn and sausage and keep warm. Add Shrimp to water and bring to a boil cook for 3-5 minutes. Heap all in a large bowl (s) and serve with Killer Cocktail Sauce.

Killer Cocktail Sauce

Combine 3/4 cup Heinz Chili Sauce, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1 to 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish, 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon grated onion, and drops bottled hot pepper sauce. Season with salt to taste; chill. Makes 1-1/4 cups.

Notes: I will only use Kraft Horseradish, but do not get the creamed variety and I use the 2 tablespoons, also sometimes I don’t bother with the grated onion – I have used a couple of drops of liquid onion if I have it on hand. Chill for several hours for the flavors to really blend. I also double the recipe because my gang really likes a lot.

Nine Patches

It has been awhile since I blogged. Life has been busy the last couple of weeks. Currently I am working on Nine Patches. I need to have 80 of them made for a retreat that I am attending in September. Do you realize that is 720 two inch squares to sew together. This is the second batch of 80 that I have made with one more group in January. My sewing room is a mess as you can see here

On Saturday I got together with my stitch group and worked on some small projects. And last week I also did some digital scrapbooking. I took some online lessons at Jessica Sprague and have really learned a lot of neat things. Of course, I love anything that is computer related.

I want to get these nine patches done, I have 38 right now, and then get back to work on my cute little baskets that are so popular right now. I would like to get several projects prepped before I go on my retreat, so that I can really accomplish a lot.

A Quick Post

Yesterday, I was feeling very frustrated working on a quilt and put the whole thing away until another time.

Today someone sent me a message with this link and it gave me a whole new perspective on things. I think we all need a nudge once in awhile.

A Step Forward

I started working on my “Nearly Insane” quilt and I have completed three more blocks. Five of my friends and I started this quilt in 2007. We were going to do four blocks per month with 2 side setting blocks per month, and it would have ended in March of this year. Needless to say I am a little behind schedule. But the good thing is I am not too far from the others.

The Nearly Insane quilt was pieced by Salinda Rupp, from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania c. 1870. Salinda’s used very bright colors and I have tried to duplicate the colors.

Today I finished up a huge basket of ironing that has been building up. I feel so good that it is done. I tend to procrastinate on chores like that. Do you?

Stepping Outside The Box

I have stepped outside the box with my last couple of quilts. I usually stick to 19th Century fabrics and quilts.

I made this Paper Doll Quilt for my granddaughter, who is four years old, I can’t wait to give it to her.

here is the back with some of the clothes. I have even had fun playing with it.

I have now stepped back into a more comfortable space. I am working on my Nearly Insane quilt. Lynne from Treadles and Treasures inspired me to get back to work on it. Lynne and her husband also collect antique sewing machines. So do stop by their blog and take a look.

Another Finish

I machine quilted and finished up another project. One of the baskets is sort of catawampus but I will just say it is “primitive” or an “antique” . Better finished than perfect. That’s my story and I am sticking to it.

I went to the framer this afternoon and picked up these two needlework projects. The cross is a gift to my Son and Daughter-in-law. I decided that the sampler needed something more so I hemstitched, but for some reason not all of the holes are opened as they should. It might have something to do with “warp and weft”

Taking a Break

I was dusting the sewing room and sat down to take a break. Here I am fiddling around on the computer. Today I did some “seasonal changes” to the house. I finished the binding on the quilt that I just got back from the quilter. I am using it on my dining room table at present. I thought it might be a little to bright and was thinking of tea dying it. What do you think?

I am still working on my Nebraska Waves quilt from “Vintage Journey” by Jo Morton and I have started the Mary Wigham Quaker Sampler but have not stitched very much.

I am sure glad that I learned about Windows Live for posting to my blog. It has cut the time in half and the pictures stay where I put them! This is thanks to Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill.

Well, I think I have stalled long enough and better get back to the dusting. Have a great day.

Works in Progress

I finished up the quilt I was working on and have delivered it the quilter. Doesn’t it seem nice to meet a schedule?

So I decided I would concentrate on works in progress. I made this little quilt designed by Jo Morton for her Little Women Club back in May. So I decided it was time to quilt it so I could hang it for the 4th of July.

Now that is done I am working on this. It is also designed by Jo Morton. I attended a workshop with Jo in 2008 and this was the project. It is called Nebraska Waves and is also featured in her newest book “Vintage Journey”

This will most likely not be the final setting. It is just on the design wall and I am working with the colors.

I am also making progress on my Beatrix Potter Quaker spot sampler. It has been fun to work on this piece.

I bet you are saying - she sure has a lot going.

Time For A Change

Now that Summer is upon us I decided that it was time for a change. My Dear Jane quilt has been hanging since December. So today I changed and hung my Women of Design Quilt up unfortunately you can see too much of the design.

You can see more of the quilt here. I also finished a round robin quilt, but I cannot show a picture because the recipient is a follower. But I can say that the overall quilt is beautiful.

I also put one side of the border on my Rhapsody in Blue quilt - now to make all of the other half square triangles for the other three sides. (big sigh)

While I sew I listen to audio books and I love the Anne of Green Gables series, even as an adult.

Today I finished "Before Green Gables" by Budge Wilson. It is a delightful book one that you hate to see end.

Making Headway

A couple days ago I decided that it was time I took the bull by the horns and organize my sewing room closet. At least I got the floor cleared. That stack of blue bags contain kits, 2 to 3 in each bag. I went through and pulled out 3 bags of fabric that I will donate to Project Linus.

Then I got busy and worked on my quilt. I now have the center and inner border sewn together. Now I have to concentrate on the outer borders.

I have also been working on my applique project and the needlework projects that I have in progress.

I really need to get some of these things completed. Do you ever feel that you are overwhelmed with works in progress?

Headed Home

Day 3

Friday morning we headed home. We made a quick stop at the wool shop and the Amish Market to buy noodles. On our way back we stopped at a roadside fruit market to see about Stonewall Peaches but due to a late frost in early April they lost 90% of their crops. We did get a few East Texas peaches and they were very good.

On our way back to Johnson City, the birthplace of Lyndon B Johnson, we stopped at his ranch. You can now drive through the ranch on your own rather than take the bus. We had been to the ranch years ago, but could not go into the ranch house. This time we were able to see three rooms inside, his office, the family living room and kitchen. We were not allowed to take pictures with a flash so I did not get any inside.

This is his birthplace and some interesting things inside and we were allowed to take pictures

This is the kitchen which is across a walkway from the rest of the house.

Out behind the kitchen was the chicken coop
and in front was a garden.

The home was orginally built for a family with three children and was small. There were ten living it when LBJ was a child.

Entering the home from the front porch there was a narrow hall dividing the bedrooms from the sitting room.

The hall held a clothes tree with a glove box and a sewing machine. Laying on the sewing machine was a paper pattern for an elephant, which might have been appliqued on a childs quilt.

The family cemetery is a beautiful peaceful setting under huge oak trees.

President Johnson's grave is the tallest marker and the vase of flowers is where Lady Bird is buried. The stone has not been set yet. All of the graves are President Johnson's family and they are buried oldest to youngest.

The ranch house is a large sprawling place. Unfortunately the pictures are not the greatest - we were holding up traffic taking them.

The ranch house sets on the edge of the Pedernales River. When visitors came to the ranch President Johnson would surprise them by driving into the river with his amphibious vehicle.

After we left the ranch we traveled home to Bedford. It was a very pleasant getaway. I hope you enjoyed seeing this little bit of Texas. If so leave a comment.

Continuing On

Day 2

After breakfast we started out for a day of sight seeing. First we had to stop at a wool shop that I heard about the day before. I bought some real yummy wool pieces, of which I will use some on the Tisket a Tasket Blocks that Bunny Hill is offering.

We then traveled from Fredericksburg to Kerrville. At Kerrville we picked up a highway going west, headed to the town of Leaky the scenery was beautiful. I didn't get to take as many pictures as I would have liked as I was driving the entire trip. And unfortunately, the pictures cannot show the beauty of the scenery along this road following the Guadalupe River. You also drive through the Lost Maples State Natural Area, which is a great area to visit in the fall of the year.

When we arrived in Leaky it was time for lunch. We found this restaurant where we could eat on the patio. The food was very good and the setting was likewise very nice. Even though the temperatures rose to the high 90's it was cool with a slight breeze when you were in the shade.

After leaving Leaky we traveled on to Medina and Bandera onto Kerrville, where we stopped at Creations for me to do some stash enhancement.

When we arrived back in Fredericksburg we ate dinner at the Fredericksburg Brewery where we had German sausage, cheese and wonderful crispy onion rings along with one of their beers. We were stuffed and opted to take the Apple Strudel back to the hotel.

That's it for today as I need to get off this computer and clean up my desk, which is stacked sky high. More tomorrow about our trip home and the LBJ ranch.

Back Home Again

It was an enjoyable few days to be in the Hill Country of Texas.

Day 1

We traveled to Fredericksburg. On the way we stopped at Wildseed Farms where we walked through their beautiful gardens.

After checking into our motel we strolled down Main Street. It had been several years since we have been here and a lot had changed. There are a lot of Home Dec shops and high end clothiers. In a lot of ways it has lost some of its charm. One of the more interesting things to do is a visit to the National Museum of the Pacific War

and of course the ever present 5 and 10 cent store

It was a very hot day but we managed to walk Main Street end to end stopping for an iced tea and Apple Strudel.

Making Progress

It has been a couple of days since I have posted. I am making progress on my new quilt. I have three of the four blocks completed.

I have also started working on the Beatrix Potter SAL as you can see I do not have too much doneI will be away from the computer for a couple of days. My husband and I are taking a much needed get-away. We are going to the hill country of Texas. I will take some pictures so you can see just how pretty this area is.

Moving On

This week has been filled with chores, errands and appointments. But I have managed to get a few things done.

I finshed this sampler at long last. I feel like I have been working on it since 1870. It was lost for awhile, but now it ready to go to the framer.

As I mentioned before, I am starting a stitch along and I am ready to go.

In the meantime I did get my fabric cut and started making some of the blocks for my new quilt.
So, I can work on it while I am waiting for the balance of the fabric to arrive. I guess I should get off this computer and get to work.

Plan B

Yesterday, I measured twice and I cut once, but I forgot that the fabric was doubled! So I had to reorder. Since I always have another project waiting in the wings, I will be working on this. This month I also plan to start two sampler stitch alongs.
